Do you ever have those days where you know you really should read every passage in your Bible study, but you find yourself skimming through the parts you’re familiar with? I was having one of those days today. And then I felt like God was reminding me that I might be missing out on a precious gift He had planned for me. Lo and behold, the first verse out of the section I skipped jumped out at me.
1 Samuel 3:1 ~ The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. (NIV)
Here’s what jumped out at me. The passage is talking about the LORD (vs. the Lord or God), i.e., it’s using God’s covenant name, thus implying the relationship between God and Israel. So there they are with this established relationship and His word is rare. That’s the scene that’s set for Samuel to hear from God.
I needed this reminder today. A situation in my life right now looks pretty hopeless. I know that by virtue of my relationship with God that He’s at work in it, but frankly, I don’t see it, and I haven’t seen it even though it’s been dragging on and on and on. So, it’s nice to know that even when the word of the LORD is rare, it’s not gone.
